yoga therapy with tennis balls

Yoga therapy can restore balance on many levels — physically, emotionally, mentally — by renewing our natural capacity for self-healing. Yoga therapy classes use yoga poses, therapeutic props and conscious movement exercises that can help to provide relief from an array of chronic pain conditions and health issues.

Yoga therapy sessions are individualized based on specific needs or for groups with similar needs. After an initial assessment and intake, you will be guided through a sequence of poses and therapeutic exercises tailored to your specific needs. Yoga therapy is particularly beneficial for those with specific health challenges, injuries or special conditions.

I will lead you through an easeful flow of Moon Salutations, grounding poses and restorative poses leading to a relaxing Savasana.

54 sun salutations

54 Sun Salutations

Challenge your body. Energize your spirit. I will lead your group through 6 rounds of 9 Sun Salutations, with opportunity to rest between each set of 9 and a short meditation in the middle. We’ll finish with restorative poses and a long Savasana (relaxation). A challenging but accessible class for all levels — considered to be the half-marathon of yoga! Modifications will be offered and encouraged. Also great to do around equinoxes and solstices. This is an hour and a half class.

restorative yoga with props

Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga consists of therapeutic and supportive poses done on the floor or at the wall in supine positions and with many props — allowing the body to open and relax. Designed to reduce stress, recharge energy reserves and bring the nervous system into a more balanced state, restorative yoga is an important part of any yoga practice. These classes can also be active restorative classes involving moving meditations.

yoga nidra on the beach

Yoga Nidra

Rest. Rejuvenate. Restore. Yoga nidra or "yogic sleep" is an ancient meditation technique that involves guided meditation to induce deep relaxation and musculoskeletal rest. Done while lying down (in Savasana), its calming effects are similar to feeling hours of rest. It is said that 45 minutes of Yoga Nidra is as restorative as 3 hours of sleep. Unlike traditional yoga classes, there are no asanas (or poses). Suitable for all levels, this practice is especially helpful for those who would like to quiet an overactive mind and reset the nervous system. 60-minute sessions are available or add on a 15- or 30- or 45-minute yoga nidra after a 60-minute private yoga class. Add-on fee: available upon request.

I am trained as a yoga nidra facilitator in the Satyananda Yoga Nidra lineage

beach yoga tips for practicing in sand

Beach Yoga

The beach can be a great outdoor yoga studio and beach yoga can be a fun, casual way to experience the joy of yoga. Our area beaches provide a beautiful backdrop for classes in the sand. Listen to the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore, feel the sand between your toes, gaze at the ocean and the vast blue sky above, while the salt air and seabreeze washes over you.

Plus, when you're touching the sand with bare skin (or using a cotton towel as a beach yoga mat), you get the benefit of grounding (or "earthing") to the Earth's natural electric charge. Being grounded while being present is one of the best things we can do for self care.

Beach Yoga Tips (for soft sand):
  • Protect Your Wrists. Be mindful of your wrists when doing yoga on soft sand. Be sure to grip or "claw" the sand with your whole hand and extend your fingers to get the best support. Stay away from too many poses that are weight-bearing on your hands and wrists.
  • Mind Your Legs and Feet. Make sure to root down through your legs and feet in standing and balance poses.
  • Master Your Balance. Practicing on sand brings new awareness of balance and alignment in poses. In fact, the beach is a great place for mastering your balance poses as the shifting sand challenges the muscles in your legs and ankles. To find better grounding on the beach, try "twisting" your feet into the sand to root down. While it can be a challenging surface, the soft sand is also the most forgiving when practicing balance poses or inversions.
  • Slow Your Flow. Slow down sun saluations and other vinyasa flows and move with intention. If you move too fast, you will kick up a lot of sand. Also, be careful in poses when reaching arms and hands or feet and legs above your head while looking up as sand can fall into your eyes.
  • Stay Hydrated. Beach sand and the beach environment can be dehydrating so it is good practice to bring a bottle of water with you.
  • Use a Beach Towel as a Yoga Mat. A regular yoga mat will not stay in place plus it is nearly impossible to get all the sand off afterwards. A big beach towel, blanket or sheet works better on soft sand and some students even prefer sand only (no mat). A beach towel will also come in handy if you choose to take a dip in the ocean after class.
  • Don't Forget the Shade. Depending on the time of day you are practicing on the beach, you may also want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and/or a cap.
